Our vision is of faith schools around the world participating successfully in water and sanitation programmes
WaterSchools is an initiative to develop environmental education in faith schools worldwide, focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), incorporating religious values about water and including the religious community.
WaterSchools was set up as a direct result of the inaugural Faith in Water meeting in Salisbury in July 2009, organised jointly by the Dutch Ecological Management Foundation (EMF) and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC),
ARC is the co-ordinating partner– bringing faith groups, including their associated schools, into action on the environment since 1995: with a wide faith network in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
EMF is the advisory and strategic partner – it is a Netherlands-based water technology specialists, advising and writing publications on sustainable low cost WASH technologies.
Kenya Organization for Environmental Education (KOEE) is an implementing partner – Leading Kenyan experts in environmental education with15 years of experience in implementing eco-schools strategy and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Our current focus is in Kenya, creating a model, which will be expanded across Africa. The model incorporates improving school WASH standards at the same time as teaching about the environment and sustainable development. A resource is being developed, by the Kenya Organization for Environmental Education, to support this initiative.
We are also leading the development of a WASH in Schools mapping website in partnership with UNICEF and the New Psalmist Baptist Church, USA.
